Ongoing lecturer’s strike

Kenyan university lecturers have been on strike since September 2025, demanding payment of KSh 7.9 billion in arrears from the 2017–2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement and a new 2025–2029 CBA. The government has acknowledged the debt but offered only KSh 3.5 billion, which unions rejected. Learning in public universities remains paralyzed, forcing many students to idle or take odd jobs. Despite disciplinary threats, lecturers have vowed to continue until full payment is made. Negotiations between unions, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, and university management are ongoing, with hopes of a deal soon once arrears are verified.
